Jovanka Broz is laid to rest.
I blogged last weekend about the passing of Jovanka Broz, the widow of Josip Broz (better known across the world as TIto).
In that blog post I wondered if she would have a state funeral, would she be buried next to her husband as she had wished.
Well today she was buried in Belgrade. Without a funeral service or a flag on the coffin. The funeral march was played as her coffin was placed in the grave on the left side of the tomb in the House of Flowers, next to her husband, Josip Broz Tito.
She had no flag on the coffin because she was not a state official.
She did, however have a guard of honor and volley shots which she had earned as a JNA lieutenant and a former Partisan fighter in the Second World War.
The absence of a religious funeral service was the wish of Jovanka and her family.
Serbia’s Prime Minister Ivica Dacic led the tributes at the funeral ceremony, saying: “Today marks the departure of the last icon of the former Yugoslavia.”He said it was time to admit that the treatment she received after the death of her husband was a “sin”.
Hollow words? or Truly Meant.
